Limnology and Oceanography

Limnology often go hand in hand with the study of oceanography. Most universities that have marine academic program offer limnology and oceanography as a single major.

Since limnology dwells on the understanding of the life and phenomena of water bodies, limnology and oceanography as co-existing disciplines are instrumental in forming scientific methods of preserving water forms.

Limnology and oceanography as a twin marine discipline offers future marine professionals a multi-disciplinary approach to the relationship between the larger marine ecosystem(oceanography) and where the freshwater ecosystem (limnology) fits in the general sphere.

Institutions that are renowned in providing a full range of academic programs in Limnology and Oceanography include the Universiteit Van Amsterdam (Masters of Arts and Sciences); Hampton University School of Science in Virginia; University of Georgia School of Marine Programs; and Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

With a better prospective of where freshwater resources and the characteristics and needs of freshwater species, limnology and oceanography give a clearer focus to the roles and relationships of every organism - from the smallest phytoplanktons to the the biggest whales, and where the human factor comes in.

Together, limnology and oceanography provide a better understanding of the world’s diverse aquatic resources, helping save the world’s water bodies and the marine life that inhabit it, ultimately preserving the balance of nature for the protection of mankind.
