Limnology

Majority of the planet where we live is composed of water, and as such, there are just too many things that people need to know about water. The learning disciplines that revolve about marine subjects are many and varied, and one of them is limnology.

Limnology is actually a division of the larger marine discipline of ecology and environmental science. It is specifically defined as the study of inland waters. The study of limnology often interjects with the study of allied water disciplines like aquatic ecology and hydro-biology, both of which focuses on marine organisms and their water habitat.

Limnology often go hand in hand with the study of oceanography. Since Limnology dwells on the understanding of the life and phenomena of water bodies, this discipline is instrumental in forming crucial ways to preserve water forms in maintaining the balance of the earth’s eco-system.

The study of limnology is not confined to universities. Many research facilities as well as informal limnology classes (lectures, seminars, online and web-based lectures) are held in the United States and Europe, underlining the importance of limnology in the future of world ecology.

Likewise, many limnology societies and associations exist to provide continuing support and network links to thousands of marine professionals, primarily as a venue for knowledge sharing and updates on the development of limnology as an important academic discipline and professional career. They include the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (www.aslo.org); International Soceity of Limnology (www.limnology.org); and the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology based in Germany.
